How Much Does a Loan Really Cost?

The amount you borrow is only one part of the cost of a loan. When you repay a loan, your payments generally include the original principal along with interest charged by the lender.

Our loan cost calculator helps you estimate your monthly EMI, total interest, principal and total repayment for any loan amount.

What Is Principal?

Principal is the original amount of money you borrow. For example, if you take a loan of ₹10,00,000, the initial principal is ₹10,00,000.

What Is Loan Interest?

Interest is the cost charged by a lender for allowing you to borrow money. The total interest you pay depends on factors such as the loan amount, interest rate and repayment period.

What Is Total Loan Repayment?

Total repayment represents the estimated amount paid toward principal and interest over the selected loan tenure.

In simple terms:

Total Repayment = Principal + Total Interest

How Is EMI Calculated?

For a standard reducing-balance loan with a monthly repayment schedule, EMI can be calculated using the following formula:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)

Where:

  • P = Principal loan amount
  • r = Monthly interest rate
  • n = Number of monthly payments

Does a Longer Loan Tenure Cost More?

A longer repayment period can reduce the required monthly EMI, but it can also increase the total interest paid because the outstanding balance remains subject to interest for a longer period.

This is why it is useful to compare different loan tenures instead of looking only at the monthly EMI.

How to Reduce the Interest You Pay

  • Compare interest rates from multiple lenders.
  • Choose a repayment period that fits your finances without unnecessarily extending the loan.
  • Consider eligible part-prepayments where appropriate.
  • Check the total cost of the loan, not just the advertised EMI.
  • Review processing fees and other applicable charges separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator work for any loan amount?

Yes. You can enter any positive loan amount supported by the calculator.

Does the calculator separate principal and interest?

Yes. The results show the estimated principal, total interest and total repayment separately.

Is the EMI calculation exact?

The calculator uses the standard reducing-balance EMI formula. Actual repayment amounts can vary depending on the lender's calculation method, rounding rules, fees, taxes and other loan terms.

Does total repayment include processing fees?

No. The basic calculation represents principal plus estimated interest. Processing fees, insurance, taxes and other applicable charges may be separate.
